I am not asking anyone to make a special trip!!!! but if anyone is already
looking at newspapers in the general Calais, Lubec, Dennysville, St. Stephen
area on these dates and spots any social news related to Laughlin or some
other below names, I would be interested in hearing.
The traveler's names are Francis (Frank C.) and Hannah Rebecca Laughlin
WHITE
I very much hope to get up to the area myself but has not happened yet.
While I make if from Illinois to Portland a number of times each year, family
duties have kept me from venturing farther.
The below is from my Gt Grandmother's diary. One of the ironies of this life
is that in September of that year her first child to live beyond childhood
died of appendicitis at age 22. She grieved for the rest of her life.
July 9, 1897 Started on a trip down East by Steamer
July 10, 1897 First launching of Steamer at Rockland at 4 AM
July 11, 1897 Arrived t Machias last night at 11 PM – Eastern Hotel
July 12, 1897 Having brought our own horse and carriage started after
breakfast for Lubec sending baggage by stage.
July 13 XXXX with Capt Leander Morton – Frank’s mother from
here
Foggy almost rain so we remained indoors all day
July 14 Clear after dinner so drove to Lubec xxx xxx by 5 PM
July 15 Fog in the morning clear before noon so took a boat
sail. After dinner to the village again; made several calls on friends
July 16 Started for Pembroke stopping at the Hillside Inn,
Dennysville to dinner and rest our horse; 5 PM at Pembroke
July 17 Have met several old friends at Jese Laughlins in the
afternoon
July 18 Being no service at the Baptist Church attended the
old Union Church. Took tea with May Hatch, xx & Mr Murray called
July 19 Called on many old friends whom I had not seen for 18
years when I visited Pembroke before. Took tea with Laura Gerry several
calls in the evening
July 20 Left the “xxx” after breakfast for Calais stopping
at Robbinstown to dinner. Very hot so rested a few hours.
July 21 At the American House after tea took a ride on the
Electric to get a general view of Calais and St. Stephens
July 22 Capt. Collins passing found us an the Mazzer made a
long call talking old times and friends. Called at Uncle Joseph L’s[Laughlin’
s] in the xxx took tea there
July 23 Took a drive round calling on relatives; from Aunt
Kate got one of Grandma L –dinner plater – greatly prized took tea with Aunt
Jane Clark and family – delightful time
July 24 Morning packed trunks to send home by express. Took
Electric over to St. Stephens to bid good bye also to Calias friends.
July 25 Back to Dennysville Hotel met a party of several NY
people who were at Pembroke Hotel
July 26 Left D after dinner yesterday. Called on Mrs Tobey
and Dennison
July 27 As the steamer leaves at 4 in the morning we spent
the night on board. Perfect day. Delightful trip home.
July 28 Seems good to be home again; found all well. Our trip
all round will be remembered with pleasure.
