That's unusually low price for a substitute, especially if Jackson
wasn't a county that had met its quota ... there's a microform at the
State Archives of Michigan which records bounty payments, a great many
of which were for $75 as many recruits received $25 at enlistment and
the remainder of a $100 state bounty at a later time ... are you sure
the record is a substitute's fee (which was, remember, a private
transaction and not a state payment) and not a bounty payment ?
