It was quite common. As far as I know record wise some indexes might be in the Michigan state archives but they contain very little info.. Alot of these men served honorably but alot didnt. They got the money for serving for the person plus any bounty money for signing up in the unit. Many abused it and deserted and rejoined again under a different name for the bounty money. These men were called bounty jumpers. There are alot of reports from sargents calling roll call that had to wait for abit for the soldier to remember which name he was serving under. President Abraham Lincoln's name was pulled from the draft lotto and of course he had to hire someone to go in his place. The soldier he hired served honorably. The soldiers that were hired and and then recieved the other bounty money were viewed under very deep suspicion and many held them in contempt by the vollunteer soldiers that served simply by patriotic faith and belief in what they were fighting for.especially the all
vollunteer units that were raised in 1861 and 1862 and after. They didnt trust these people at all until they proved themselves whether in battle or in the jobs they were assigned

Am I crazy,or was there a practice whereby a person could
hire a person to serve in place of them during the Civil War?
If so what was it called and were there any records kept
that might be available? Thank You, Richard Hunt
