Pat,

You could check the holdings of the Bentley Historical Library at the
University of Michigan in Ann Arbor:

http://www.umich.edu/~bhl/

The Bentley has a large collection of Civil War items (including
photographs, letters and numerous other items). I'd start by checking the
university's online library catalog, MIRLYN
http://mirlyn.lib.umich.edu/F?func=find-b-0
<http://mirlyn.lib.umich.edu/F?func=find-b-0&local_base=bent_pub>;
&local_base=bent_pub. There's a small fee for copying. If you can't go there
in person, you can use this link to the Online Reference Request Form:
http://www.umich.edu/~bhl/bhl/refhome/refform.htm. A quote from its web
site: "Genealogists who are unable to visit the Bentley Historical Library
are encouraged to send their requests to the Reference Department. Time
permitting, the reference staff devotes one hour to any one written request.
Pertinent dates, names, and places assist the reference staff in its
search."

I once did some research at the Bentley for a client who was a Morton
descendant, but, unfortunately, I no longer have access to that information,
and I don't know whether it was the same Morton.

Message Board Post:

I am searching for information on Company E, 16th Regiment, Michigan
Volunteers. My ggrandfather, James A Morton served in this company. Where
could I find info on where this company was during the war, what conditions
were there, what food did they have, any company photos, etc.?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
