I'll do a little searching and see if I can find anyone by that name. I think the possibility of my great grandfather's father going there is pretty good, after wife #1 died. I found a Patrick Herron living there in a census after 1850 (can't remember which one, perhaps the 1880 one) and thought it might be a match. I'll do a little snooping and see what I can come up with. Thanks for the tip.

Myra,
I don't know if you are aware or not, but there was also (might still be) a
Herron family living in Vermilion, Ohio. I remember there was a teacher by
that name, but am not sure what her first name was.......might be Cathy?????
This would be in the 1980s.

Wellllll, we're not sure. Our progenitor, George Colburn Herron, had been
born in Albany, NY, and had run away from home. It's a long story, but I
believe that I found his parents and family there. They would be: Patrick
Herrin, age 42, wife Ann (family story has her name as Mary Ann, a Pennsylvania
Dutch), age 32, Hellen 15, Charles 14, James 11, GEORGE 6, John 3 and Sarah 1.
I've never found them again except for in the 1850 NY census.
That census would have George as being born in about 1844. When he got to
Michigan, he was saying his birth date was August 23, 1836, which would make
him a full 8 years older. However, the family story was that George's mother
died when he was young, and that all the children that were there were farmed
out, and George was apprenticed out. It was so awful that he ran away to
Canada. It's not known if he had relatives there, or had help getting there,
etc. He ended up living with a family named Mino. He married a young lady in
the area, Catherine Link, who had emigrated from Germany with her family.
(I believe that he claimed the birth date he did to insure that he was assumed
to be older than she was. He married Catherine in about 1860, we believe.
He hid himself well those days. We've never found their marriage records
anywhere. Nor the birth records of their first 2 children, who were born in
Port Huron, MI. If he married Catherine in 1860, before the birth of!
their first child, it could have been as late as November of 1861.
All his relatives that he ever talked about were his descendants. He did
talk about his parents, and gave their names, and said that there were 6
children in the family. The ONLY family I have ever found that had a Patrick and
Mary Ann (Ann) and 6 children with one of them named George is the family in
Albany in 1850.
Having said all that, I do have to admit that I did find a Patrick Herrin in
Sandusky Ohio in the 1880 census. He was about the right age, and remember,
wife #1 was dead. This wife was age 50 to his 70, and they had 2 children,
Ellan age 22, and Patrick 20, both born in Illinois. There were other
Herron/Herrin people in Illinois earlier, so I would almost assume that they may
well have been related. It's NOT a common name. The spelling doesn't mean
much, however. Enumerators have been known to be pretty creative in spelling
names back then, believe me.
So, I guess the answer is 'I don't know.' I'm still almost convinced that
he ran away at such a young age that he didn't actually remember many things
correctly. Or lied about them. So, I may never be able to define who he is
actually descended from and related to, unfortunately. Sorry for such a long
"I don't know" answer, but in our case, it's kind of complicated.
