Subject: [MIBARRY] Sidney HULL Death Date Discrepancy
Date: Fri, 16 Mar 2007 15:01:56 -0500

Hello everyone:

I am in the process of documenting some of my ancestors and relatives
more thoroughly and have run into something of a predicament.

My ancestor, Sidney HULL (born 16 Aug. 1805, Crown Point, Essex Co.,
NY), was a pioneer of Baltimore Township, Barry County, having moved
there in around 1854-1855. His grave stone is quite badly eroded, and
was broken and cemented back together at one time. The date of death on
his tombstone is not legible, but published cemetery records give his
year of death as 1863.

I had no reason to doubt that date until last night when I found him in
the 1870 census of Baltimore Township [page stamped 48/handwritten page
#9, lines 18-20, dwelling #69, family #72] with wife, Charlotte, who is
believed to have died in 1876, and a granddaughter, Calista POWELL.

Not only that, but this morning I discovered the 1880 census index shows
him as Sidney HILL. In looking at page #17, dwelling #169, family #169,
it is clearly my Sidney HULL, age 75, living in the same area of
Baltimore Township, near the same neighbors, etc., with a much younger
second wife, Louisa, age 49, and stepdaughter, Cora CRAIG, 16. I haven't
been able to find Louisa and Cora CRAIG in previous census records as of
yet.

I now wonder if the gravestone was mis-read as 1863, when it was
actually 1883 or 1893, or something else entirely.

What do I do now? Can someone help me solve this mystery? If there is
someone who would be willing to check the sexton's records, or perhaps a
death record at the county clerk's office, I would be extremely
grateful.
