Rough/Rauch line came to Berrien County from Pennsylvania in 1849 and settled in what is known as "Portage Prairie", an area between Niles and Buchanan, south of US 12 down to the Michigan-Indiana border. other surnames in this line include: Seider, Housewerth, Swartz, Garman.

Feather line came to Berrien County from Pennsylvania in 1832 and settled in what was known as "the Feather Settlement" which area is located on Hinchman Road between Hollywood Road and Scotdale Road. Other surnames in this line include: Warsco, Bechtel, Smith and Broceus.
