Subject: [MIBE-AREA] Posting to GenConnect Biography Boards
Date: Tue, 09 Jan 2001 21:29:23 -0500

HINTS and TIPS for posting to GenConnect Biography Boards
-even if you have posted to GenConnect boards already, please read and let
the list know if there is anything that I have left out- or anything that
could be made clearer or easier. Thanks!

***************

1. Choose the GenConnect biography board for the county of residence of the
subject.
Berrien County:
http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mi/BerrienBios
Cass County:
http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Mi/CassBios
-volunteers will be getting both county subjects - there is not easy way to
separate them out
-scroll down to "Post a new message" there you will see boxes to input info.

2. Name:
- usually this is for the name of person posting the relative's biography.
In the case of our project use "Portrait and Biographical Record"

3. E-mail:
- I was able to leave this blank - previously I had thought that you had to
put an e-mail, but it didn't seem to mind. If not, you will put in your own
e-mail address.

4. Subject:
- type the full name of person who the biography was written. When doing my
relatives, I like to put birth year-death year, but for the project, we do
not know the date of death.

5. Surname List:
- type the last name of the subject. Several ways to put all the surnames
on the list. One is to read through the bio, and under line or highlight
the surnames in the bio, maiden names, married names of children, etc.
Another is to position this input box where it is visible while inputting
the biography the MESSAGE: box, then use the mouse to click in the SURNAME
LIST: box, and input surnames as you come across them. Lastly, you can
input the entire biography and the afterwards, copy and past surnames into
the SURNAME LIST: box.

6. Message:
- begin the posting with the bibliographic information about the source.
For our project use:
"Portrait and Biographical Record..., Biographical Publishing Co., Chicago,
1893." The input the text of the biography exactly as written. Be ready
for strange wording, strange punctuation, and strange capitation of
words.... but do not change... that is part of the charm.

7. At that point you can scroll up to the start of the MESSAGE, and proof
read the text - or you can "preview message", using the button at the
bottom of the page. If you preview, you can toggle back, using "edit"
button, and only after the button "post message" is used. After posting, a
message can only be edited by the board administrator.

8. Optional link, and link title can be left blank.

9. BE SURE THAT YOU remove the check mark from the notification box. This
is helpful when you are posting biographies of relatives, because you would
want to know about anyone posting additional information on the subject,
but for the project you probably don't want to receive an e-mail about the
subject.

These instructions are pretty much the same for the Queries, Wills, Bibles,
Pensions boards.

Thanks again to the volunteers, pages are in the mail, have reached 100
pages being sent out!!!
