Last week I went to the National Archives in Laguna Nigel,
California trying to seek out information concerning
James P. KNOWLTON. While I was unable to go backwards,
I was able to go forward in both Allegan and Cheboygan
counties, Michigan.

From my earlier postings to this list, I had said I'd
found James P. and Mary F. (HART) KNOWLTON with their
children Lucinda, Alanson L., and Melvin F. on the 1870
Census in Plainwell, Allegan County, Michigan. I had
also stated I'd found James, Mary and Lucinda in Plainwell
on the 1880 Census.

While I was unable to locate Melvin F. KNOWLTON on the
1880 Census. I did find Alanson in Gun Sight Township,
Allegan County, Michigan. (Plainwell is also in Gun Sight
Township).

The household data:

Knowlton, Alanson W M 23 Carpenter PA NY NY
Cora W F 21 Keeping House NY NY NY
Faunce, Kate W M 18 Teaching School NY NY NY

The "M" for Kate Faunce was as specified on the Census.

There is a DiBean marriage record for:
Alanson S. KNOWLTON and Carrie E. FAUNCE for 15 January 1878.

The relevant online cemetary records from Hillsides Cemetary is:

Knowlton, Cora E. d. Apr 30, 1881 ae 22y 2m 28d
Knowlton, Cora May dau of A.L. & C.E. d. Sep 1, 1881 ae 4m 29d

There is also a DiBean marriage record for:
Alanson L. KNOWLTON and Emily C. RUMBLE for 18 October 1882

And there is another DiBean record for:
Melvin F. KNOWLTON and Celina E. REESE for 17 October 1882.

The online Hillsides cemetary record shows only:
Knowlton, Melvin F. b. Dec 11, 1860 d. Feb 4, 1899

Makes you wish the 1890 Census still existed.

From the 1900 Soundex Index covering Michigan KNOWLTONs:

Oddly, I didn't find James P. and Mary F. KNOWLTON.
But I did find Alanson. I did not look at the Census, only
the index.

Knowlton, Alanson Nov 1856 43 PA
Emily R Dec 1856 43 MI
Mabel Nov 1884 15 MI
James Oct 1887 12 MI
Robert Jan 1890 10 MI

Although James and Robert were surprises, the ages of Alanson
and Emily are consistent with the 1870 Census information.
Emily C. RUMBLE was 13 and living with her parents in Plainwell,
Allegan Co. in 1870.

The data for Mabel KNOWLTON is consistent with a GEDCOM I
had previously located identifying her as the daughter of
A.L. KNOWLTON and Emma RUMBLE. I have no doubts that Emma
are the same Emily, particularly given the DiBean marriage
record above.

An interesting circumstance arose when I checked the California
Death Records on rootsweb. I found the following:

James A. KNOWLTON, sex male, born 10/28/1887 in Michigan
mother's maiden name RUMBLE
died 03/03/1967, age 79, in Santa Cruz County, California

And one not quite as conclusive:

Robert M. KNOWLTON, sex male, born 01/09/1890 in Michigan
died 12/03/1971, age 81, in Butte County, California

I have found no DiBean marriage records in Cheboygan County
for any of the three. However, Pat Jahn's marriage index on
the Cheboygan County USGenWebsite lists a marriage of
23 year old Mabel F. KNOWLTON to 23 year old Harry DELAMARTER
on 3 August 1908.

The 1910 Miracode Index for Cheboygan, Michigan (I never did
figure out how to find the page I was looking for using this
index) lists:

Emily 53 Mich
Robert 20 Mich
Mary 80 NY

And finally, Pat Jahn's Death index posted on the Cheboygan
website, lists:

I had previously brute-forced my way through several images
of the 1920 Census including Hebron and Mackinaw.

What this essentially gives me is a family tree, minus dates, of
