The following list is an "assessment of labor for the year 1848" for a
"highway" in "Ste. Maries." Owing to the fact that everyone had their own
families to feed and work to do, I find it amazing that the county assessed
labor to build roads and that our ancestors took the time as a community to
do just that! I found these lists to be an interesting bit of history
considering we take our interstates and blacktop roads for granted. What
they had were probably little more than deer paths outside the village
limits! Hope you find them as interesting as I did. I found them to be a
mini- census and used them as such. The hand writing of this document was
much more difficult to read. Therefore, there was a greater number of
interpretations made.

their official duties ...(one word ?) the following list of persons hath (?)
to highway work in the Lower District was received from John M. Johnston
overseer of that District and the following assessments of labor for the Year
