Please would some kind person give me some advice concerning the 1841/51 census records.

My g g grandfather was apparently a Lawyer in Edinburgh. I don't know his date of birth. There is family conjecture as to whether he was called George KAY or George MACKAY. His son also either George Kay or MacKay turned up in India in 1869 aged 29 years and calling himself George MACKAY. Therefore born in 1840/41. There is a family rumour that George (the son) changed his name following a row with his father,

I have looked at the LDS Catalogue. The films of the census for Edinburgh appear to go by Parish with all census records to 1881 on the same film. Not much help if the Parish is not known or unless an Index is available.
There appears to be a book 'arranged alphabetically by surname' of the 1851 census, apparently published by the Scottish Genealogical Society. However I found no reference to the book on their website. What is the best way to proceed?

Most grateful for help or advice.
Patrick Puttock.
