If you look at the Ship Transcriber list at Rootsweb, there are four different
volumes of transcribed ships. If the departure place is Scotland, which you
can choose, then go to each of the volumes and see what the outward bound ports
are. Leith, Greenock, and Glasgow are the ones nearest Edinburgh, but ships
sailed from other ports in Scotland. It may have depended on how large they
were and how much water they needed to go in and out of port. And, in the late
1800's and 1900's, it wasn't that hard to get a train to the South and sail
from England - I guess it was a matter of money.
Many of the ships were built in the shipyards in and about Glasgow, and it was
an easy thing for the brand new ships (or others which were being refitted
and/or just loaded) to go down the Clyde to the open water. The Queen
Elizabeth and the Queen Mary were both built and sailed down the Clyde River on
their maiden voyages. In 1684, the "Carolina Merchant", built in the shipyard
in Greenock, sailed down the Clyde to the Atlantic, then on to Charleston, SC,
and the 148 passengers aboard, Scottish Covenanters all, established Stuart
Towne near Beaufort/Port Royal/Edisto, SC.
If you have not checked the ships list, your ancestors may well be listed there
by name - that's another way to search, as is by ship name and by captain's
name. They go back to the 1700's, although there aren't as many then as there
are later. Recently AARP ran an article about needing transcribers for these
lists and there should be many more soon - rootsweb was avalanched with
volunteers. Good-Oh! Good luck, salina5
