Hello,

My family research indicates (not proven) that ancestors, who married in the Tranent/Gladsmuir area in 1766, may in fact, have been first cousins.

Can anyone please advise whether this might indeed have been the case? Would a marriage between cousins have been a commonplace event accepted by the Church or would it have been forbidden as in later years?

I would appreciate your comments.
