Hi Beryl
I am starting to think that he was named after someone outside the family - having just spent a few hours and lots of pounds on Origins searching further back - I have to wait for the certs and opr entries to arrive to make sure that they are the right family but there are still no Ballingall connections to speak of - just need to see who the various witnesses were in case that shines any light on the name.
Regards
Shirley

I've found in my research that my Scottish ancestors thanked their
benefactors by lobbing their children with the surnames. One of my MLN clan
gave the child the surname of the minister who baptised him, another one the
surname of a neighbour and friend, and after they came to Australia they
tended to give their children the surname of anyone who was overly kind to
them. That's as a second Christian name I might add, not as a first.
The one I feel sorry for is poor old Archibald Pow - a woman - who married
into the Colston clan.
PS Isn't Ballingall a place in Ireland? Perhaps the child was named for a
favourite PLACE?
Cheers

I have got a couple of generations further back but nothing so I will keep
trying to locate and you never know if I am spoilt for choice of the next
gen then this may be the deciding factor!
