Subject: [MLN] "Great House"?
Date: Fri, 11 Jan 2002 00:36:27 -0000
Hi. I am new to this list, and interested in a Retour of Service of Heirs
index record recently found, which might just through some light on my LYON
research. The relevant entry reads:
"Hugh LYON, china merchant in Ayr, (served heir) to his uncle William LYON
stocking weaver there who died 1 Feb 1850 - Heir General in a fourth part of
THAT HOUSE CALLED FOXTON, EDINBURGH -SHIRE, dated 2 Feb 1852."
Can anyone help me to identify this house and more specifically, the parish
it was in? Another entry in the Retours of Service of Heirs is possibly
more descriptive:
"Agnes LYON in Dalrymple, Ayrshire, (served heir) to her brother John LYON
there, who died 9 Mar 1835 - Heir Special in one fourth share of the ground
storey of THAT GREAT HOUSE CALLED FOXTON OR GOLFHALL, EDINBURGHSHIRE, dated
2 Feb 1852."
I would like to know more to find out which further back ancestor possibly
owned the house and left shares of his estate to, presumably, nieces and
nephews etc.
