Dear Maureen,

My earliest directory is 1940. .Are all the directories on CD now?

Middleby Street, a short street of large stone Georgian houses, a left turn
off Minto St or right off Upper Grey St. in Newington. I pass it on the bus
whenever I go into Edinburgh. There were no businesses there in 1940 just
the Misses Kellie listed at no 12.
As for Laundries and "Steamies":
In that area from the 1940 PO directory has::
The Edinburgh Laundry Co. incorporating McAdam's Steam Laundry,
197Causewayside. (Mrs.Elizabeth Farquharson,1 S. Howard Place).
The Western Laundry, 15 Duncan St. (Mrs.E.O.Taylor).
Roseneath Laundry, 3 Meadow Place.
Over 20 listed.including 'Laundresses and Clear Starchers'. A bit too recent
for
your purposes,

Best Wishes,
Jane
.
