Hello Duncan,
I now believe both entries you found in the 1881 are my ancestors! Thank you
so much.
Would you be kind enough to send me the Record Office references?
My William HUTTON b.6.4.1849 (Canongate, Edinburgh) was married to Margaret
b.1858 and not Mary (mistake in my transcription of 1901). In 1901 his
occupation is stated as "Caster in Type Foundry" which corresponds to
"Typefounder Carter" in 1881.
From IGI it appears that William had a sister Elizabeth
b.15.5.1851(Canongate, Edinburgh). Their parents were James HUTTON and Jane
BURNET (who married 29.6.1841 at St Cuthbert's).
From the info. you found in 1881, Jane, now a widow, was a grocer living in
Maitland St., North Leith. This info. could link her to both James HUTTONs
mentioned in the 1848/9 Edinburgh & Leith Directory (one listed as Grocer,
Water of Leith and one as E&L Gas-L co, Leith)
I'd love to be able to track them on the 1851/61 and 71 censuses.
As always the more you learn, the more questions are raised!
I am puzzled as to why Elizabeth HUTTON is recorded as being born at
Canongate in IGI, but St Cuthbert's in 1881 census?
Are they the same place in Edinburgh e.g. one within the other?
Thanks again, your help is much appreciated.
Regards
Andy Walsh (Sheffield, England)
