Please reply on list and if you get a bunch of private replys, would you
please share them with me because we are thinking of traveling to Edinburgh
within the year to meet extended family and do research.
Blessings,
Joanne (Virginia, USA)

I'm planning a trip to Edinburgh
Diana in British Columbia, Canada:

Travelers!

Some thoughts. I would not rule out staying someplace like Dalkeith instead
of right in Edinburgh. There is an awesome bus system in Scotland and a bus
ride to Edinburgh is about a pound and the accomodations are much cheaper.

You wouldn't necessarlily have to stay in Dalkeith, any nearby city would do.

I stayed in Gilston Lodge in Dalkeith and it had rooms or a self-catering
available.

Some questions to ask:

How far off the street is the room and does it face the street. ( busy
streets at night make sleeping difficult, especially in summer).

How far from the house is the bus station?

(Gilston lodge has a bus stop right across the street.)

I am sure you already know this, but please contact all the buildings u r
going to visit and set up your reservations in advance. Sometimes there is a 2
week wait to get in.

If you want to meet and talk to the Scot's and people from all over the world
in a quiet, intimate setting ( breakfast) then the B&B is the way to go. You
get to know the proprietros and visitors well and the conversations can be fun
and enlightening.

You might wish to read the story of my trip to get a good idea about what to
expect in Scotland, and it might generate some questions for you to ask your
prospective proprietors! Yes, you SHOULD talk to each one of them on the phone
before committing if you can!
