Subject: [MLN] Morningside Cemetery - Intention to flatten some gravestones
Date: Sat, 16 Aug 2003 18:43:03 +0100

If you have relatives who are buried in Morningside Cemetery in
Edinburgh, you may be interested in the following news.

Edinburgh City Council is in the process of making their cemeteries
"safer" by "laying flat" stones which they consider to be unsteady. So
far, over a quarter of the stones which have been inspected in various
cemeteries have been laid flat, either by pushing them over (resulting in
the breaking of some stones), or by using special equipment.

After *much* protest about the lack of consultation and the methods that
have been employed by the Council in the past, they have announced that
they are going to start work in Morningside Cemetery on 1 September 2003,
and that there will be a public meeting on Monday 18 Aug 2003.

A series of newspaper articles about the council's controversial
activities can be found at
http://www.news.scotsman.com/topics.cfm?tid=754 whilst the article about
the meeting on Monday is at
http://www.edinburghnews.com/edinburgh.cfm?id=890832003

The location of the cemetery is shown by the red arrow on the map at
