Hi Listers,
Thanks to all those who have answered my question about the term
'goddaughter' in the 1861 census in place of and meaning 'daughter-in-law'.
Now can
anyone come up with a suitable term for a son's long term,
female, unmarried partner in 2003 - besides 'daughter-outlaw'?
Regards,
Jane

Hi Jane,
I've never come across this but according to "The Concise Scots Dictionary"
God as a prefix can mean in-law. The expression has been in use from the
late C14 to the present day.
