Hi Rhoda,

I see that Calton Prison was in St Cuthberts, Greenside by 1881 but the 1861
census that same area was South
Leith or St George Parish.
see the parish map:
http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/forrestdale/Parishes.html
A photo of the prison:

There is a street index for Edinburgh 1861 but no name index as far as I
know. The prison was on Regent Road.

You will need to order the correct film from your
nearest LDS, FHC. You can see their catalogue at http://www.familysearch.org
click on 'library catalog'

1861 Street Index, Vol. I FHL BRITISH Film 104116

1861 St. George 685/1 (part) E.D. 73-122 St. Andrews 685/2 (part) E.D. 1-16
FHL BRITISH Film 103875

1861 St. Andrews 685/2 (part) E.D. 25-97 FHL BRITISH Film 3876

1861 South Leith 692/2 FHL BRITISH Film 103882

Try the Scottish Genealogical Society for census indexes available to buy,
too.
http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/
and I would look at this site for many helpful hints too:
http://www.scotlandgenweb.org/~midlothian

Perhaps you could you locate the family by finding their address on a
child's birth certificate from:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

Hope this helps,
Jane

DONALD, his wife Elizabeth and their children? He was a prison warder in
the Edingburgh Prison, at that time. My great-grandfather's name was Thomas
James.
