Fiona,

Did you find his birth record? It shows up on Scotland's People, but no
image is available. The date given is 18 Oct 1816; parents David Davidson
and Margaret Macintosh. I know the year is off from what you gave us, but
that happens often. He's the only one in Edinburgh from 1810 to 1820. Hope
this helps.
