You don't say where you obtained your information from. Have you had a look
at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk?

On that website, I can find a John McNeal, but born in 1838 rather than 1836
and there are 7 people of the name Agnes Reid born in 1842. Unfortunately,
these records are listed according to parish rather than county (i.e.
Midlothian), so you would need to pay to obtain more information about them.

You are quite specific about the date of your great grandmother's birth but
I can't find her under West Calder in 1865. (West Calder is in West Lothian
rather than in Midlothian.) If you can obtain a copy of her birth
certificate, this will give you her parents' names.

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me the best way to go about finding out
information regarding John O McNeal b. 1836 Midlothian, Scotland and Agnes
Reid b. 1842 Midlothian, Soctland. They came to America about 1871. I know
that my great grandmother Kathryn (Katie) McNeal was born Mar. 24, 1865 in
West Calder, Midlothian, Scotland, but I have been unable to find anything
on her parents. Any help would be appreciated.
