The management and recording of poor relief, varied between the various districts and
even between congregations of the same city. This was probably conspicuous in the
non- Conformist faiths since these often had lay staff and limited assets.
Step 1 is to identify the relevant parish.
Step 2 check that place in Family History Library Catalogue, and maybe also in the
holdings of Nat Archives Scotland.
The former catalogue (1992 ed) when tracked via the headings SCOTLAND- MIDLOTHIAN-
STOW covers parish docs listings but poor relief not indicated.
Similarly, a track to SCOTLAND-POOR HOUSES- POORLAW ETC covers relevant docs (seven
publications) any one of which might deal with MLN as part of a wider coverage.
You may see later versions of the FHL Catalogue online (FamilySearch) or at any FH
Centre.
If you know the faith to which the family adhered, then a letter to the relevant
Session or Dicocese or other central church Office may help.
