Hello Edith,

I'm not sure whether anyone has suggested to you that your Cannon Street is
probably Canon Street, as in Canonmills, Canongate etc. The Canons in
question were the Augustinian canons of Holyrood who owned the mills. There
was a Canon Street in the Canonmills area and I imagine it's still there
although I don't have a terribly up-to-date map of Edinburgh. If you look
for Canonmills in an online map, you'll find the street.

There is a useful book on the derivation of Edinburgh street names put out
in 1975 by Edinburgh Corporation City Engineer's Department. I think I've
seen it online but I'm afraid I don't know what the URL is. I do, however,
have a copy if you want some basic information on any other streets.

Anne in Canberra.
