Subject: Unregistered deaths in Edinburgh, 1880s?

Dear list,
In 1827, in Penninghame Parish Wigtownshire, Charles HUGHES married Mary
McCAY or MACKIE. They moved around the local area for a while, but by
the time they had the 8th of their 9 children in 1846, they had settled
at Challoch in the parish, and there they stayed for about a quarter of
a century (based on 1851 and 1871 censuses).

Then, in the 1881 census, they appeared in Restalrig Rd, South Leith,
both aged 73. While some of their children now lived in Edinburgh
(including Robert Murray Hughes and his wife at 33 Dean Path, and
Margaret Hughes and her husband William BERTRAM at 9 South Elliot St),
they lived there in their own household.

By 1891 they were gone. Hardly surprising, given their ages. But I can't
find a matching death record in the material available at
Scotlandspeople - not just for Midlothian, but for the whole of
Scotland. The nearest matches for a death of Charles, for example, are:
1879HUGHESCHARLES65GOUROCKRENFREW567/02 0079
1881HUGHESCHARLES63GIRVANAYR594/00 0096
1892HUGHESCHARLES69ST MARYANGUS282/02 0247

But as you can see, none are even close to being old enough. It is
possible, but seems highly unlikely at their age, that they moved
outside Scotland.

So the obvious question is: does anyone know whether deaths occurred in
the Edinburgh area in the 1880s that went unregistered, or for which
registers are known to be missing? Has anyone access to other records
(eg burials) that might reveal what happened to Charles and Mary?

Separately, if anyone has these people in their trees and wants more
info about descendants, please get in touch.

Any advice gratefully received.
