Dear Debbie (and other"s interested)
I think I may have come up with some of your YOUNG ancestry. If I am corecct then the following is how you are related to the same ancestor that I am, namely George YOUNG (1759) and Margaret LOW (1756).
I'll start with your James N. YOUNG and work up to George YOUNG so you can see the YOUNG path. Then I'll try to explain why I think there's a relationship.
James N. YOUNG (abt 1850) son of George YOUNG and Elizabeth NAPIER.
George YOUNG (2 Dec 1824 Easthouses, Midlothian, Scotland ) son of John YOUNG and Jean WILSON. ------- and
Elizabeth NAPIER (14 Jul 1828 St. Viigeans, Angus, Scotland) daughter of James NAPIER and Mary BLACK.
John YOUNG (18 May 1782 Hunterfield, Midlothian, Scotland) son of George YOUNG and Margaret LOW. ------ and
Jean WILSON (parents unkown)
George YOUNG ( 9 Jan 1758 Liberton, Midlothian, Scotland)
Margaret LOW (23 Apr 1756 Midlothian, Scotland )
Some time ago I found some info on the above George YOUNG and Elizabeth NAPIER. At that time they began to fit into the family but I didn't have much info on their children. As I was going through my YOUNG info again looking for a connection to James N YOUNG, I noticed the 1851 Newbattle, Village of Newton Grange census.
It lists George YOUNG, head of house, 26 yrs old, (b. abt 1825 ), a collier, born in Newbattle.
His wife, Elizabeth, 23 yrs old, (b. abt 1828) born ?
His son John, 3 yrs old (b. abt 1848) Newbattle.
His son James, 1 yr old (b. abt 1850) Newbattle.
I only have one other copy of a census for that family -- it's 1880 Newbattle
It lists George YOUNG, head , 55 (ab 1826), born in Newbattle, a collier.
His wife Elizabeth N., 53 (ab 1828), born Glasgow.
His son George, 22 ( ab 1859 ), unmarried, a coal miner, born in Newbattle.
His son Robert, 20 (ab 1861), " " " " "
His dau. Catherine, 18 (ab 1863), " , paper mill worker, " " .
His son David, 11 (ab 1870), " , scholar, born in Temple, Mid.
His grandson James Y. Simpson, 7 (ab 1874), " , born in Newbattle.
Then between the IGI and Pedigree Resource I found more of the family. The dates are highly questionable on some of the people however but I'll give you what I have.
John, ab 1848: James, ab 1850: Jane, ab 1850: George, 22 Jan 1858: Robert Napier, 23 Jul 1860: Catherine, 29 Oct 1862: David, ab 1864: David, 11 Mar 1870:
As I look at it probably the only really questionable date is Jane's.
In the 1880 census John and James are not there. John may have died and James was in the US by that time living with Chole's family, the NOTMANS.
Jane may be married (to a SIMPSON) and was away since I'm assumning the grandchild there is hers. The initial "Y" would stand for YOUNG. Also only one David is present, the other probably died.
Notice that the wife in the 1880 census has a middle initial of "N". Most certainly this is for NAPIER.
It would seem that the middle initial "N" that James uses would also stand for NAPIER.
Looking at name customs we see that 1st son John, probably named for paternal grandfather --- James probably named for maternat grandfather -----
Jean (or Jane) probably named for both grandmothers
I notice there is no Elizabeth so there may have been another child
The son George probably named after the father
I found their banns in the OPRs.16 Jul 1847 Dalkeith and 19 Jul 1847 Cranston.
There appears to be a Robert Carson who submitted some of the work on this family (James N YOUNG) to the Pedigree Recource File. You may want to contact him to see what other infor he has to go with this
His name again: Robert Carson

This is a lot to digest so I'm going to send more soon. I plan to send you an e-mail ged com on what I have on the YOUNGS. Do you have any suggestion?
Also if there's anyone else who has info to add, or quest to ask I'll look forward to hearing from you. Thanks a lot.
Sorry I forgot to mention that I do have a copy of the Sharon, Mercer, PA.,US 1870 Census showing James NOTMANS' family with Chole and sibblings and with James N YOUNG age 22 living with the family.
Also I have a copy of the 1900 Census in Unita township with Chole and James and their family. I can include more details later.
One more important thing that I would like to ask. You spoke about the brothers of James N YOUNGS and that they may have been missionaries. Could you fill me in on any info you have about that? I would really appreciate that. And again thank you so much for all your help in putting together this added info on the YOUNGS.
Talk to you soon, Yvonne
