Dear Listers,
Greetings from afar.
I am addressing these questions to the Midloathian list because I think it
may have a larger subscription, and possibly more 'Historians'.
I have several questions I hope to find answers to:
(1) My atlas spells Tyninghame, East Lothian with one 'n', but copies of
some older documents that I have spells it with 'double n'. Is my atlas wrong
or has the spelling changed in recent time?
(2) Was Tyn(n)inghame church deestroyed at sometime and Whitekirk & Tyn(n)
inghame parishes combined?
(3) Was/is Eastergateside a road/street in Tyn(n)inghame? Also could anyone
explain the 'side' part of the name? I know of many 'roadways' called
'gates', but haven't come across the addition of 'side' before.
(4) Was/is Caperstone a hamlet or perhaps a farm in the parish of Whitkirk
in 1839? My gt.gt.grandparents were living there when they baptised a child
at that date. It was also their last known address when they emigrated to
Australia later that year.
(5) May I quote: "31st Dec. 1803. That James ANDERSON in this parish, &
Grizzel (sic) AITCHISON in the Parish of Dunbar gave up their names to be
proclaimed in order to marriage before these witnesses, Thomas ANDERSON, John
WADDLE & John KNOX, is attested by William MURRAY, Session Clerk."
Was this an actual marriage, or a promise to marry - perhaps similar to
'reading Banns'? The IGI quote this date of 31 Dec 1803 as their marriage date,
but Dunbar PRs give a date 2 weeks later of 14 Jan 1804. I'm puzzled, any
help will be most appreciated.
May I wish you all a Very Happy New Year.
Kind regards, Peter Fewson
