Hi listers and especially Henry,

I have no secret to tell on how I managed to get back so far with my
research. I just followed the tried and true method of purchasing (this
was well and truly before the internet) respective birth, death and
marriage certificates to get back as far as I could, then followed thru
by searching the LDS films of OPRs for Currie Midlothian. At all times I
checked (and rechecked) to make certain I was able to confirm lineages
(especially important when working with the OPRs and here it's handy if
you can locate death certificates to prove parentage details). I was
also fortunate that the family never moved from Currie which made the
searching of the OPRs easier and also the minister recorded a lot of
detail making it easier to confirm parentage etc. For my particular
family research, starting with my grandmother, this meant (apologies to
all on list who find this uninteresting):

Rachel Cuthill RICHARDSON (birth certificate - 1897) >

Rachel CUTHILL and Charles RICHARDSON (marriage certificate - 1891) >

Charles RICHARDSON (birth certificate - 1868) >

Robert RICHARDSON and Margaret HENDERSON (marriage certificate - 1855) >
which gave me the names of respective parents and then it was off thru
the OPRs >

Thomas HENDERSON and Janet ANDERSON (marriage entry and backed up by
their relevant death certificates to confirm parents names - 1833) >

Thomas HENDERSON (baptism entry and backed up by his death certificates
to confirm parents names - 1806) >

Robert HENDERSON and Agnes FLEMMING (marriage entry - 1805) >

Robert HENDERSON (baptism entry - 1772) >

Alexander HENDERSON and Jean SOMMERVILLE (marriage - 1772) >

Jean SOMMERVILLE (baptism - 1758) >

David SOMMERVILLE and Jean PHILIP (marriage- 1745) >

Jean PHILIP (baptism - 1721) >

George PHILIP and Janet SLUSH (marriage - 1718) >

George PHILIP (baptism - 1699) >

Robert PHILIP and Joan/Jean GIVAN (marriage date unknown)

Sadly, with the earlier generations it is hard to find "meat" to add to
their names and dates but I keep slogging away!!
