Thanks for your reply.
Like you say the marriage should have been registered here in NZ. It was
compulsory after 1860 here, though a number of the old registers never
made it to our central repository, and are lost forever. The other
problem is that Captain Brown was taken before the courts for failing to
supply the necessary vitals the passengers who were short of food and
water. There was a big well documented court case, but Brown skipped the
country, so maybe the records were never handed in here.
Fortunately there was a passenger on board who had the foresight to
document everything on a daily basis, and he details the marriage which
was held with two other couples, one of which was a crew member. All
their later records elude to the marriage on board.

I will email the NAS, who are very helpful and see what they say. I have
to go there to look at some wills so it would be convenient.
