.... It's not a difficult issue to resolve. If any of you care to go through the ships' registers for immigrants to the US and also the US censuses it is easy to pick up on the relative literacy of immigrants from different countries. There is an old lending library in Crief, Innerpeffray Library, which was opened ca. 1680 and its records show that the lenders came from all classes. moira
