STATUTORY BIRTHS

The statutory births index is compiled in the main from the paper indexes to the civil registers of births implemented in 1855 under the Births, Deaths & Marriages (Scotland) Act, 1854. The General Register Office for Scotland in Edinburgh holds a complete set of statutory birth registers for all the registration districts in Scotland since 1855.

The statutory births index available on this site, covers 1855 to 2006.

Each index entry includes: year of registration, surname, forename(s) and sex of the child, district and county of registration and the GROS references (see below).

Index entries do not include:
1. The full date of an event because only the year was captured when the index was compiled, although it is present on actual register entries.
2. Parents’ names, but these are present on register entries.

GROS data
The numbers in the column "GROS Data" provide additional reference points for locating the source records at New Register House and can aid the General Register staff if you need help with a particular record.

For example, 282/02 0164 where:
- 282 is the registration district, (in this case Dundee), equivalent to the registration district name shown in the index record.
- 02 is the registration district suffix, (in this case St. Clement), an additional index term for locating the relevant register. This is not always present.
- 0164 is the number of the entry in the register itself.
