Abbots"

The Falcon at Dunval, Astley Abbotts, Bridgnorth.
Visited on 12 July 1901.
Licensed Beerhouse (on premises)
Licence first granted about 1837.
Owned by Thomas TIMMINS, Tasley, Bridgnorth.
Occupier and Manager ; Joseph Herbert ELCOCK, for the past 12 years.
Rateable value ; 10 pounds 16 shilling.
3 rooms upstairs and 4 rooms downstairs.
Stabling for 2 horses.
Condition of building ; Good and clean.
Nature of Trade done ; Agricultural and roadside.
Proximity to other Licensed Houses ; 3/4 mile.
Proximity to other dwelling houses ; 150 yards.
Position of House with regard to Police Control ; 2 1/2 miles to Police
Station.

"Besides the three existing Inns......// snip //..... there used to be
Inns at Cross Lane Head (Snowdrop Cottages) called The Plough: The
Victoria (now Dunval Farm) latterly called The Falcon, which was the
Whitmore crest: .............

On a map that I've seen, titled Astley Abbots Parish 1842, based on
Tithe Apportionment & Map, 6 inches to 1 mile, The Victoria Inn [later
called The Falcon] is shown. It's position matches exactly that of
Dunval Farm buildings on a modern map, thus confirming the previous
source.

ELCOCK Joseph Herbert, dairyman, Cross Lane Head [hamlet adjoining
Astley Abbotts]

In the churchyard of St Calixtus, Astley Abbotts are grave stones for
Joseph Herbert ELCOCK, his wife Emily Frances, their son Josiah Edwin
ELCOCK and their daughter in law Jennie Beatrice ELCOCK. Photographs on
the above web page.
