also
many, old photos include
the photographer's advertising and address usually below the photo,
mounted on stiff cardstock, with ornate scripting, as people were proud
of their work, more-so, in bygone days.

I found this a clue, where to look in English parish registers,
using the AA Road atlas, locating the parish, surrounding parishes, the
market town, then going to the LDS FamilySearch.org site to look for the
surname's Christenings and marriages, etc. in that and surrounding parishes.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

The parish batch numbers are needed to probe the LDS site.
Hugh Wallis had a good site, listing these, but his collection has been
absorbed by Rootsweb now and is rather cumbersome compared to before.

Maybe someone knows more about finding batch numbers, since the change.
Fortunatly, I still have the original lists which make for quick work,
collecting a surname's details.
