Subject: Are these two PREECE girls one and the same? (Also COLE)
Date: Tue, 29 Mar 2005 16:08:15 +0100
Greetings all
My apologies for this rambling on a bit but stick with it!
My GGGfather Charles Preece was born in Mordiford, HEF, in 1853, son of
Henry and Sarah (Hide). He had two sisters, Elizabeth (1856) and Sylvia
(1860). Sarah then appears to have died in 1861 (confirmation awaited), and
they disappear after the 1861 census.
In 1880 Sylvia Preece aged 20 travels to New Zealand where she marries two
years later.
My GGGfather marries in 1880 (in Gloucester) and moves to a delightfully
named cottage called 'Frog Trotters Bottom' in Hartpury, GLS.
In a new discovery in the 1871 census for Ashperton,HEF I have found a Mary
Ann Preece, aged 35. She is shown as Wife (and married) but no Head is
present. She has with her 4 children, including a "Silvie" aged 11, born in
"Herefordshire". All are shown as her children.
I can see no other records for a Silvia/Sylvia/Silvie for the same age,
either in other census returns or GRO records.
I am assuming that this must be the same person, and if so when did Henry
marry Mary Ann (possibly COLE), as I cannot see a Henry Preece - Cole
marriage anywhere (HEF or elsewhere!).
Henry from Ashperton dies in 1875, aged 47.
My Henry was '25' when he married in 1852, and '36' in the 1861 census.
No idea where he was in 1851, his father is named as Thomas on the marriage
certificate.
I feel I have made a breakthrough but I am stumped!
Thanks for any suggestions or sightings.
Ian Preece
