Obituary: Jack B. Mapes
Rites Held Friday for Sunfield Businessman
Funeral services for Jack B. Mapes, 66, of Logan Street, Sunfield, a local
businessman, were conducted on Friday, September 7, from the Mapes-Fisher
Funeral Home in Sunfield. Mr. Mapes passed away September 4, 1979 in Naples,
Florida.
Mr. Mapes was owner of Mapes Furniture Company in Sunfield and co-owner of
Mapes Georgetown Manor on West Saginaw Hwy. in Delta Township. He also was
formerly associated with the Mapes-Fisher Funeral Home.
Mr. Mapes was born in Sunfield on May 24, 1913, he was the son of Harry and
Ethel (Bera) Mapes. He was a graduate of Sunfield High School and he
attended the University of Arizona. On March 1, 1933, he married Frances
Carter in Douglas, Arizona. He was a lifelong resident of Sunfield. He was a
member of the Sunfield Lions Club, Sunfield Lodge, No. 455 F&AM, and the
Elks Club.
Mr. Mapes is survived by his wife Frances; three daughters, Mrs Mary Ellen
Clark of Mt. Clements, Mrs JoAnne Wood and Mrs Jackie Postula both of
Hastings; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs
Dorothy Dowd of Ontonagon; and a brother, Larry of Sunfield.
The Rev. John Morse of the Sunfield United Methodist Church officiated at
the 3:00 p.m. rites. Interment was in Sunfield Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were Harold Figg, Keith Hough, Clare McWhorter,
Kenyon Peabody, Lawrence Porter and Elmer Van Antwerp.
