He probably took the Copper Country Limited. This was a Chicago, Milwaukee,
and St. Paul Railroad (AKA Milwaukee Road) passenger service that ran from
Chicago, through Wisconsin, to Nestoria and then to Houghton and Calumet on
the Duluth, South Shore, and Atlantic Railway tracks. There was no need for
the ferry. I am not sure when this passenger service started, but I do know
that it ended in 1967 or 1968. The other alternative, I think, is that he
took the Copper Range down to Mass City and then connected with the
Milwaukee Road and then down to Chicago. I am less sure of this service,
but I believe the Milwaukee Road ran a passenger service, call the Hiawatha,
into Ontanogan and that it passed through Mass City. I do not have my notes
for the Milwaukee Road in front of me, perhaps someone else can verify this.
By the way, the normal way to get to Detroit was to take the Duluth, South
Shore, and Atlantic Railway to St. Ignace and then the Mackinac ferry to
Mackinac City. There you could take the Michigan Central to Detroit. I
believe that the two other railroads, whose names escape me, also reached up
to Mackinac City.
