Dr. Robert E. Kavanaugh - Encinitas, CA, Formerly of Kalamazoo, passed away February 28, 1981 in Encinitas, CA. Dr. Kavanaugh was born August 5,1926 in Kalamazoo. A graduate of St. Augustine High School, he entered St. Joseph's Seminary in Grand Rapids in 1943, followed by studies at Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit, Mount St. Mary's of the West in Norwood, Ohio and St. John's Provincial Seminary in Plymouth. He was ordained in Lansing ceremonies in 1951 and entered Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. to pursue post-graduate studies in philosophy and psychiatry in 1954. Dr. Kavanaugh, a former Roman Catholic priest, was a writer and lecturer on death and dying. He left the priesthood in 1965 and became a provost at the University of California at San Diego. He retired from that positon about three years ago, but continued to teach at the university and privately. His books include "The Grim Generation," about his experiences with young people when he was !
chaplain of the Newman Club at Michigan State University. He also wrote "Facing Death." He was one of seven sons of Frank P. Kavanaugh, a leading Kalamazoo businessman who died in 1972, and his wife, Hazel, who lives at 2428 Carlyle Drive. Four brothers also survive; Dr. Thomas E., a Kalamazoo physician; Dr. Daniel E., a Galesburg dentist; Dr. Phillip R., a psychiatrist in San Mateo, CA and Dr. James J., a former priest and now a writer, lecturer and poet residing in Nevada City, CA. The other two sons were Dr. John W., a local physician who died in 1977 and Frank P. Jr., the owner of a Kalamazoo insurance agency who died in 1978. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Betzler-Donovan Funeral Home, 447 W. South, where the Rosary will be recited this evening at 7:30. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Friday morning at 10:30, St. Augustine Cathedral. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Those who wish may contribute to the charit!
