JOHNSTON, Rev. Hubert
Reverend Hubert Johnston, a man who dedicated his life to the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ went to be with his Lord on Saturday, September 14, 2002 after a brief illness. His life began on December 9, 1918 in Goshen, Indiana, the youngest child of Charley and Eva (Rhoades) Johnston. He grew up in Indiana and went to high school in Warsaw, IN, where he met his future wife, D. Juanita Emerick. He and Juanita were high school sweethearts who were married on May 22, 1938 and for the next 60 years they shared their hopes, dreams and struggles until Juanita's death in 1999. Hubert faithfully served his country during WWII, serving in both Japan and the Philippines. It was during his tour in the army that he received his calling to be a pastor. After his discharge, he would answer the call and dedicate the rest of his life to full time pastoral ministry. Some of the churches that he served over the years were in Olive Bethel, South Bend and LaPaz, Indiana, New Castle, PA!
, and in the Michigan communities of Burlington, Edgewood, and for the last 12 years at the Westwood Church of God in Kalamazoo. Even with the many hours that were required to be a pastor, Rev. Johnston was a dedicated family man that would gladly help his children, grandchildren, or great grandchildren in their time of need. He counseled by example and with his words of wisdom. He was truly the patriarch of the family. Members of his family include his children, Judy Bard of Portage, June and her husband, Robert Smith of Jackson, Myra and her husband, Bruce Thomet of Traverse City, Marlene and her husband, James Kirst of Riverview, FL, Krista Johnston of Union City and Kathy Carroll of San Ramon, CA. His family also includes a brother, Orval Johnston of Richmond, IN; 14 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 22 great-grand-children; 1 great-great-grandchild. In addition to his wife, Juanita, he follows in death 2 brothers, Lester and Herschel ; a sister, Faye VanGundy; and a !
granddaughter, Deeana Lynn Thomet. Friends may spend time with Rev. Johnston's family on both Monday and Tuesday from 6-8 pm at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Funeral Home, Portage Chapel. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, September 18th at the Westwood Church of God. Burial will be in the Burlington Cemetery in Burlington, MI.
