Rites Held For Ex-WMU Educator, Author - Word has been received here of the death last week of Louise J. WALKER, former Western Michigan University English department faculty member. Funeral services for Miss WALKER, 85, were held last Friday in Grand Rapids. Burial was in Jackson. Miss WALKER taught at Western from 1924 until her retirement as associate professor emeritus in 1961. She was the author of more than 100 short stories and essays. One of her early interests was in the Chippewa Indian legends, which she felt should be preserved. Miss WALKER met many Chippewa squaws while spending her summers in the Charlevoix area and learned from them the legends which she wove into her stories. Her books on Indian legends included "Legends of Greensky Hill" and "Woodland Wigwams." source: Kalamazoo Gazette Wed Jul 21, 1976 (submitted by a volunteer, no family connection)
