TIPTON, Harold E. "Pete"

Died December 31, 2003. Pete was born on March 8, 1932 in Kalkaska, MI, the son of John L. and Sarah E. (Phinney) Tipton. On September 2, 1967, he married June Weber, who survives him. He worked as a Search and Rescue Co-Pilot in the U. S. Coast Guard. He was active in many organizations and clubs, including the Traverse City Eagles, the Moose Lodge, the VFW, the American Legion, and the Harley Davidson Motorcycle Eagles of Traverse City. He was one of the founders of the American Military League of Traverse City and also managed it for several years. He was a Shriner and a 32nd Degree Mason. In his work with the Shriners, he transported children to the Shriners Hospital in Chicago. His own children remember him playing Santa Claus for the children at the U.S. Coast Guard family Christmas party. In his military service, Pete was the recipient of four Good Conduct Medals, two National Defense Service Medals, and two Bronze Stars. He enjoyed hunting. Pete was a great cook. He !
also loved animals and had rescued many of them from the pound and adopted them as pets. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lawrence Tipton. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Linda (Roger) Vinkemeier of Kentwood, Peggy (David) Handy of Traverse City, Harold "Bud" (Nancy) Tipton Jr. of Grand Rapids; step-children, James (Stephanie) Cerka of Pensacola, FL, Diana (John) Geisel of Hudsonville, David (Sharon) Clark of Traverse City; 14 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchildren; sister, Patricia (Clyde) Robertson of Traverse City. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave , with the Rev. James Dyke, officiating. Interment at Fort Custer National Cemetery. No visitation is scheduled.
