HAMMING, Mrs. Katherine
Of Kalamazoo
Went home to be with her Lord on Friday April 1, 2005. Katherine was born December 22, 1908 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of John and Agnes (Stiemsma) Dekema and has been a lifelong area resident. Katherine loved the Lord, was a prayer warrior for everyone she knew and was a very hard worker at any project she took on. She was a member of the Covenant United Reformed Church and had formerly served as secretary for the Ladies Society at Second Christian Reformed Church. She also served as secretary for Willing Workers for William Street Christian School where she directed 3 Three Act Plays and managed several paper drives to help raise funds for the school. Katherine enjoyed crocheting, sewing, reading, but most of all loved family gatherings. On July 31, 1928 she was united in marriage to Richard "Renze" Hamming who preceded her in death on September 25, 1981. She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Bert Dekema, Bertha Dekema, Alice Howe, Richard Dekema, James Dekema, !
Sadie Wiersma, Clara Visscher and a son-in-law, Rene Wolthuis. Surviving are her children, Raymond (Carol) Hamming of Kalamazoo, Celia Wolthuis of Portage, Donald (Darlene) Hamming of Kalamazoo and Marlene (Ralph) Klooster of Mattawan; 13 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; several step grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Gruizenga; a brother, Lawrence (Ruth) Dekema; in-laws, Alice Dekema and Henrietta Dekema and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8pm at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street . Funeral Service will be held 11:00am Monday from the Covenant United Reformed Church (3724 Lovers Lane) with Rev. Wybren Oord officiating. Interment will be held in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. A lasting memorial in Katherine's memory may be directed to the Kalamazoo Christian School Association, the Reformed Heritage Christian School or a charity of your!
