The Schoolcraft Express: 12-11-1903, page 6
Schoolcraft relatives, friends and neighbors were pained last Saturday morning
to hear of the death of one of our oldest residents, Mrs. Mary Martin, who
passed away at the home of her grand-daughter, Mrs. S. W. Haugh, of Scotts,
where she had been spending a few weeks. Death came after an illness of only
three days, the deceased having been apparently in her usual health up to the
time she was taken suddenly ill. Mary Ann Bongey was born February 20, 1828, in
York county, Pennsylvania, her age being 75 years, 9 months, and 15 days. She
emigrated with here parents to Ohio when 12 years old, and was married to Thomas
Clemens November 27, 1845. To this union was born eight children, five girls
and three boys, six of whom are now living. She came to Michigan in the fall of
1861, and two years later Thomas Clemens died. On October 23, 1865, she was
united in marriage to Charles M. Martin, with whom she lived until his death
which occurred September 16, 1894. A son and daughter died in infancy. The
children who survive and who were all present at her death are: Elizabeth
Flynn, Oshtemo; Anna M. Clemens and Mary Isabell Lance, Schoolcraft; Alfred B.
Clemens, Mishawaka, Ind.; George R. Clemens, Marcellus, and Agnes Randall,
Kalamazoo. She also leaves an only brother, Alfred Bongey of Monroe, Wis., and
a brother-in-law, Krader Lamberson of Algona, Iowa, both of whom were here to
attend the funeral. The funeral took place Tuesday from the Schoolcraft M.E.
church, of which she had been a member nearly 30 years. The services were
conducted by the pastor, Rev. Mr. Fallas.
