BENJAMIIN POORMON. This venerable man has been identified with the interests of this county since 1854, and has done good work in opening up the land comprising Pennfield Township. More than one tract of land there has felt the effects of his vigorous labors, and among the citizens he has exerted, a good influence, ever favoring those movements which
would tend to elevate the status of society or increase the financial prosperity of this section.
Although nearly four-score years of age he is remarkably vigorous in body and mind, having
inherited mental and physical strength from a long line of sturdy ancestors. His home is on the banks of St. Mary's Lake, in Pennfield Township. Mr. Poormon is of German lineage, but his
father, John Poormon, was born in Dauphin County, PA. He went from there to Seneca County, NY shortley after his marriage and engaged in farming. During the War of 1812 he volunteered and started with an old flintlock gun.................. He lived to the age of 66 years. His mother had borne the maiden name of Pancake and lived to be o103 years old. She was possessed of a large frame and at one time weighed 310 punds.
The mother of our subject was known in her maidenhood as Mary Green. Like her husband she was born in PA and was of German descent. ............. She was a member of the Lutheran Church, cheered by the fath of which she diedn when 66 years old. She reared a family of twelve children, named respectively; Daniel, Catherine, George, Jacob, Mary, Benjamin, John Joseph, Elizabeth, David, Anna and Reuben.
Benjamin Poorman was born in Seneca County, NY January 5 1812. ..................
After his marriage Mr. Poorman worked out by the day or month and also farmed on shares considerably. In the spring of 1854 he came to this county, making the journey by rail to Buffalo, steamer to Detroit and rail to Battle Creek. The previous fall he bought 80 acres of land on section 6 , Pennfield Twp.
In Sept 1835, the interesting ceremony which made Mr. Poormon and Roxie Hitchins man and wife was solomnized. The bride was born near Sackett's Harbor, NY , on the St. Lawrence River, and lived to be 48 years old. Her children are Ansel D., Elizabeth (Mrs. Davis), Charles C., Mrs. Emily Darling, Mrs. Precilla Packer, Chauncy, Mrs. Charlotte Young, Mrs. Ida Phillips (deceased) Mrs. Mary E. Quafe, and 3 who died in infancy.
A second marriage was made by Mr. Poorman, Sep. 5, 1864, his bride being Mrs. Sophronia Decker, nee Wicks. She was born in Mass. and was descended from a noted family. Her maternal grandfather, James Otis, was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The Wicks family came originally to America in the 16th century. Mrs. Sophronia Poorman died Nov 6, 1887, and her mortal remains lie with those of other members of her husbands family in Hicks Cemetery in Pennfield Twp.

Had this already in data base.
His only son I've not yet been able to follow is Ansel D. but I've not looked real hard and will now. He was born abt 1835 in NY and would be of an age to be the father of the ppl you have in the 1880 census. Looking for that family in 1870 with no luck yet.
