The information given about DeVos and Van Andel has been helpful and I thank
everyone for the responses. The problem I have now is in identifying their
ancestors that came from the Netherlands for my friend who lives there.
Though these are unquestionably two prominent benefactors to Grand Rapids,
they do not appear on the Famous Dutch-Americans Genealogy website.
I guess I should stop being lazy and just look for them in the Census and
City Directories. Though DeVos is a fairly common name (in the southern area
of Zeeland, the Netherlands), Van Andel possibly is not as common here and
probably originates from the province of Holland. My friend was not
interested in writing a book about these two men; he only wanted to know how
they might fit into his own genealogy--if at all. Chances are they probably
are not related. But this is such a kind friend--I thought I would try.
Sometimes genealogy societies do family histories of their locally famous
people--often without comments; just the names, dates and places. NWGS
would be the most likely to have such a history, I suppose.
