My great-grandfather, Asahel A. Tewksbury, served during the Civil War. A
pvt. in Co. "I" of the Third Michigan Infantry. He enlisted in Grand Rapids
and served over three years in the battles Virginia. He was wounded twice;
once by a musket ball in the leg at Cullpepper. He was wounded the second
time at Fair Oaks, Virginia when a cannonball passed next to his head and
over his left shoulder. The cannonball left him deaf in his left ear and
paralyzed his left arm. Although wounded, in both instances, he refused to
go into the field hospital and returned to his company to resume the fight.

Four of his great-grandsons; Merrill, Dale, Ralph and Darwin Tewksbury all
served in the wars of WW II and Korea.
