WAS ONE OF THE BEST WORKERS AT BUSINESS

Started Making Boots and Shoes Over Forty Years Ago.

In the death of JOHN MUIR, which occurred at the home of his daughter, MRS. GUY WESTERVELT on Monday, July 13, Rockford loses a man who has lived to see the town grow from a little hamlet up to the present time.

He was born in Glascow, Scotland, April 20, 1847, and came to Canada with his mother in 1860. He was bound out to a shoemaker for five years and soon his mother returned to the old country leaving him here to make his way alone. He came to Plainfield in 1865 and was married to ELIZABETH MOORE December 31, 1865.

They moved to Rockford in 1870 where they lived continuously with the exception of the year 1888 which was spent at Manton. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Muir, four of whom, with Mrs. Muir, has passed on before. Those living are ELMER J., MRS. AGNES WESTERVELT, JESSE D., and GEORGE W. Besides these Mr. Muir is survived by an aged mother in Glascow.

It was only until the past two weeks that Mr. Muir didn't work at his cobbler's bench where for the past forty odd years he has repaired the shoes of old and young. In earlier days he was considered the best boot maker in this part of the country.

The funeral was held from the home of his daughter, south of town yesterday, the sermon being preached by Rev. C. Finster and the interment was made in the Rockford cemetery beside the remains of his wife and children.

Elizabeth was b. 24 June 1844, in Canada, the daughter of John H. and Mary Maria ( PLATT) MOORE. They had eight children:

John Muir d. 31 July 1914, in Rockford, Kent Co., MI. Elizabeth d. 27 Oct. 1901, in Rockford, Kent Co., MI. According to John's obituary, he, Elizabeth and the four children who died before him, are all buried at ROCKFORD CEMETERY.

Besides the Ancestry.com listing, I used the Rockford Cemetery Records, the 1880 U.S. Census, and the Michigan Death Index, 1867-1897, in attempting to reconstruct the names, birth and death dates of the children.particularly the four that had died young. This information should not be taken as gospel. Primary records should always be sought out when attempting to establish proof.

NOTE: I am not a family member, thus I don't have any further information on the MUIR family.
