Going back over the 1930 census.
Age at marriage William J Allen 38
Age at marriage Aluaf Allen 27 (Olive L)
That would be abt 1919.
So I would believe Elizabeth died and this would be second marriage for William.
And as Irwin H Allen was born 19 Jul 1916 Michigan,
Elizabeth may have died in child birth, or soon there after.
Before 1919 anyway.
Also, Elizabeth would have alreay been pregnant on the ship.
Was there a full date on "the ship manifest from 1916"

I would look for the death of Elizabeth Allen in the Houghton County courthouse.Between 1916 & 1919
