I have to tell a success story, Sheila, of what is truly a genealogist's
dream! Don't give up! My story involves family oral history and intrigue.

Somewhere after 1844, Stephen Mills, b. Screven Co, GA about 1816, the
younger brother of my great great grandfather Thomas Mills b. Screven Co,
abt 1810, disappeared from record in Early County, GA, where he, his older
two brothers, and younger two sisters all lived in 1840. By 1850, both older
brothers were dead, and neither sister lived in Early County. One
eventually moved back, but the family never even knew the other sister
existed until I found her on 1836 guardianship papers in Florida, where the
family moved from GA in the late 1820s.

Last spring I found Stephen through a posting on rootsweb for his youngest
sister and her husband. I had traced him from Early, GA to Panola, MS, to
Yell, Ark. Stephen had a different wife that the person he had married in
Early Co, GA. Living in Yell, Ark, in 1860 also, was a John W Mills, who I
supposed to be one of Stephen's nephews (son of Archibald), who had last
been on the 1850 Early County census with his widowed mother). I found both
John W. and what I assumed was his brother Benjamin F. Mills on the
Confederate rolls in Arkansas with the information that Benjamin F. head
died in 1862. Benjamin F was last on the 1860 Early co, GA, census with his
uncle (and there were guardianship papers in Early).

Anyway, I was not sure that these were Stephen's nephews, just assumptions.
I located Stephen on a will for his father-in-law and was able to obtain his
wife's maiden name. Stephen disappeared after the 1860 census, but John W.
was on the 1870 census. John W's wife was widowed by the 1880 census and
living with her widowed sister in her household. I deducted that both
sisters had been married to the Mills brothers John W. and Benjamin F. I
found John W's widow on the 1900, 1910, and 1920 Texas census.

This was the end of the story as far as information I could find. Then one
night last week when I went to the list serve to read a posting that had
been emailed to me, I put "Arkansas" in to the search engine and found a
2005 posting, a query for John Wesley Mills (with all pertinent
information). I immediately emailed the person who had posted the query.
Yes, the email address was still good, and John Wesley's descendant emailed
me the next day. All of these were indeed the people I had supposed.

After 165 years, I learned about Stephen, who had the same mystique in the
Texas end of the family that he had in the Alabama end of the family! The
story involved buried jewels during the Civil War and a second disappearance
after a supposed move to the Oklahoma Territory and then to Texas . . .

And I also discovered Texas cousins, descendants of John Wesley Mills. A
grand story!
