Just as an aside, my family RETURNED from California after the Gold Rush.
After the Civil War there was a minor depression in California due to the
decrease in government expenditures for food and supplies needed to support
the Army. Then with the completion of the Union Pacific/Central Pacific
railroads in Utah in 1869 there was a huge layoff of the railroad
construction worker gangs.
The laborers, many Chinese, flooded the job market in California, causing
great unemployment.
My Irish ggf, William Scanlon, who had been working in Grass Valley where
the gold mining was large scale and hydraulic, left with his family about
that time, first for Houghton and Copper Country, then a few years later,
for Negaunee, where they settled permanently. They had only been in
California for maybe 8 years or so.
No doubt others may have followed that same path.
